The Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka is a route that follows the legendary tale of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, which is believed to have connections to various sites across the island. The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic attributed to the sage Valmiki and narrates the story of Lord Rama’s quest to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana.

The Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka is not just a pilgrimage but also a cultural and historical journey that connects travelers with the rich mythological heritage of the island. Here are some key sites along the Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka:

  1. Ravana Cave: Located in Ella, this cave is believed to have been a hiding place for Sita during her captivity by Ravana. It is said to be one of the places where Ravana kept Sita imprisoned.
  2. Ravana Falls: Also situated near Ella, Ravana Falls is a picturesque waterfall that is said to have been created by Ravana’s brother Vibhishana when he was asked to fetch water for the coronation of Rama.
  3. Sita Amman Temple: This temple, located in the village of Seetha Eliya (also known as Seetha Eliya), is dedicated to Sita and is believed to be the place where she was held captive by Ravana. The temple is situated in a beautiful wooded area, adding to its serene ambiance.
  4. Divurumpola Temple: According to legend, this temple in the town of Nuwara Eliya is where Sita underwent the “Agni Pariksha” or the test of fire to prove her purity after being rescued by Rama.
  5. Ashok Vatika: Located in the city of Nuwara Eliya, Ashok Vatika is believed to be the garden where Ravana kept Sita captive. It is said to be the place where Hanuman met Sita and gave her Rama’s ring as a token of his identity.
  6. Manavari Temple: Situated near the city of Chilaw, Manavari Temple is believed to be the first temple built for Lord Rama’s consort Sita. It is said that this temple stands at the spot where Rama installed a Shiva Lingam to invoke blessings after the end of the war with Ravana.

These are some of the key sites along the Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka. Visiting these locations not only offers insights into the ancient epic but also allows travelers to appreciate the cultural and religious significance of these places in Sri Lankan mythology.

Verses in Ramayana are written in a 32-syllable meter called anustubh. The epic was an important influence on later Sanskrit poetry and Indian life and culture, primarily through its establishment of the shloka meter. Like its epic cousin the Mahābhārata, however, the Ramayana is not just an ordinary story: it contains the teachings of ancient Hindu sages and presents them through allegory in narrative and the interspersion of the philosophical and the devotional. The characters of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Bharata, Hanuman and Ravana (the villain of the piece) are all fundamental to the cultural consciousness of India.
